The North Sea 365 days a year
The North Sea is everything for the whole family from looking for amber on the beach in the autumn, to frothing winter storms, to baking summer days in the sand dunes.
Regardless of when you visit the North Sea, you will have an experience of nature for life and an inner peace in your soul.
Søby Brunkulsmuseum (brown coal field museum)
With just 30-minute drive, Hotel Vildbjerg is an attractive starting point for a family visit to Søby Brunkulsmuseum. Søby Brunkulslejer is between Kølkær and Fasterholt, 13 km south-east of Herning. Up to around 1970, brown coal was mined here, which was formed in the Tertiary period 10-25 million years ago. The digging had to go deep to reach the brown coal layers - in some places more than 30 metres.
When the brown coal mining discontinued and the pumps were switched off, the water rose. The open cast mines became lakes after which the nearest sand piles slid out. Since the water could no longer follow permanent ground water routes, this led to countless slides and subsidence and new lakes appeared and changed.
Denmark's largest pride of lions
