Søby Lignite Museum With only a short half hour drive, Hotel Vildbjerg is an attractive starting point for a visit Søby Lignite Museum. Søby Brunkulslejer is located between Kølkær and Fasterholt 13 km southeast of Herning. Up to approx. In 1970, lignite was extracted here, formed in the Tertiary period for 10-25 million. years ago. They dug deep to reach the lignite layers, in some places more than 30 meters.
When the lignite excavation ceased and the pumps were stopped, the water rose. The tenants became lakes, after which the nearest sand tips slid out. As the water could no longer follow solid groundwater veins either, it led to numerous landslides and settlements, and new lakes emerged and changed.
